The Dangerous Hilltop Restaurant In China - Dine If You Dare!

I received an e-mail a few weeks back about a hilltop restaurant somewhere in China. The e-mail has been sat in my inbox since then, until I found out some facts regarding the pictures and location……Unfortunately, after quite a search I found…..absolutely nothing! The only relevant information regarding the pictures etc where actually other people who had received the very same e-mail and were looking for info too.

Anyway, having said that, here are the pictures of the death defying restaurant, according to the e-mail I received, once you get there….or should I say IF you get there, you can eat free. But don’t believe everything you read LOL.

If anyone knows where the pictures are taken please please please let me know.

First - take the tram up to the start of the trail.

I just received this same email today. My searching found nothing as well. I’m very curious about its’ validity.

  3. RaisiDaisy Says:

Ha Ha..I got here looking for info on this resturant too…i was really curious to find out.

  4. J Nasty Says:

Well, like you all I got to this site by looking for more info on those pics. I haven’t found much other than it is Huashan Mountain, in China. The mountain has 5 peaks and is one heck of a dangerous climb. I haven’t come across anything that delves further into describing the restraunt or the hike to it. Hope this helps.

    Yours Truely
    J Nasty….lol

This is Mount HUASHAN in China’s Jiangnan area and I believe these photos are from the 1960’s but I am not quite sure , or, who took them, but it is entirely valid.

  6. Rebecca Mackay Says:

again - the province in this area of Jianging is SHIAANXI Province. Go to :

one mmore thing - I believe it isn’t a restaurant , but rather, a temple. Mt. Huashan - you just have to put the following into google if you can’t get it through the cultural china webpage :

    Mount Huashan
    Mt Huashan
    Mt Hua Shan

it lies on the ridges of five peaks and is one of the sacred mountains in China, and also the most precarious to climb from the temple below.
I hope this will help and amswer your queries. Cheers! : )

  8. Mary Newby Says:

I would love to do that climb if it really exists. What a wonderful adventure. I think we who are interested in the email and pictures probably have the same wish. Thanks for all the info on the mountain.

  9. sarah Says:

ha ha ha - how funny I receive the email too and thought I;d try to find the name of this restaurant. Only to end up here cos there’s nothing else on the web about this restaurant.

  10. Claire Says:

Just got this picture emailed to me and the greedy side of me wanted to find out if it’s tru (that if you reach there the meal’s free that is…)
Wonder how many people actually make it…

[…] para los más atrevidos. No sé si es cierto o si de verdad existe, pero si consigues superar el camino, la comida es gratis… y no me […]

  12. Rebecca Mackay Says:

I keep coming into this page - just put MOUNT HUA SHAN into GOOGLE even into U TUBE and you WILL find it there and YES it does exist!!!!!
    Need I be more explicit?
These are five sacred mountains and yes, you have to do the climb to get to the top but there is an alternative, easier route on the other side.
Those of you in doubt, if you want to do this climb, then GO to China and find out. It isn’t hard to find, especially if you plan it with your local tourist board. there are plenty of recent pics on the internet as well as videos.
Mount Hua Shan. It’s there. It’s real, and it’s breathtaking.

  13. Rebecca Mackay Says:

But the IS NO RESTAURANT at the top. THAT is just nonsense.

  14. blogpig Says:

It was just a bloody blog post. There is no need to be so up yourself. I received an e-mail (as did others judging by the comments) and blogged about it.

Yes it looks gorgeous and I did say that I didn’t know where or what it was. Thanks for all your info but it’s hardly my fault that you keep ending up here when you google it…Is it??

It’s the same blog post that has always been on Blogpig, i haven’t changed or edited it, you told us in your first comment what you knew about it, so why the sarcastic comment:

“I keep coming into this page - just put MOUNT HUA SHAN into GOOGLE even into U TUBE and you WILL find it there and YES it does exist!!!!!
    Need I be more explicit?”

  15. aine Says:

hahaha…cool…i love to experience this!!! but so sad it’s not real

Got the email again today. Following up on Rebecca Mackay’s note to Google Mount Hua Shan, the first link turns up this:

It has lots more text, pictures and a map.

  19. April Says:

I got the e-mail too & i looked on snopes.com for information on it & there is nothing there either.

  20. JStin Says:

It’s funny, we all must be thrill seekers…haha. We get the email, say to ourselves “I WANNA DO IT… I NEED MORE INFO ON IT!” and find this website…lol

  21. Nitin Says:

Guys it is a temple up there not restaurant it is a …very known place in Chain ……………known as MT Huashan….
Many tourists visit the place …… and with only a pair of gloves they climb to the top of the mountain…..however there are other routes to reach the top the one in the pic above is the most dangerous one which is a short cut to the top of the mountain.

  22. Rebecca Mackay Says:

    Hi Nltin

Yes, you are right. Thank you , some of you folks for posting those links above. I hope that people have tried them. And no, one doesn’t always end up in this blog when one puts Mt Hua Shan into google. There’s plenty of other references to it . And it is real, it is real , it IS real.
There are easier routes up and down this rock face. It’s a big tourist destination in China, but people climb it to worship at the temple. The IS NO RESTAURANT.
    The climb is VERY dangerous.
It would be wonderful to have someone write into this blog, who has actually done the climb.

  23. candice Says:

i look on the net for ages regarding this e-mail and found this attached. it is real too..

  24. Aeryn Lynne Says:

Heh heh, nearing the end of 2009 and that email is still making rounds (Read it for the first time this morning). Maybe there should be four constants of life: birth, death, taxes, and long-lasting email spam.

I love debunking those crazy email forwards and found your blog-post first. Thanks for the info! XD

  25. Sarah Says:

I climbed Hua Shan about 2 years ago. Its a great climb. You dont have to do the very dangerous route but whatever route you take it is fabulous. The best way to do it is to leave early and to stay in the hostel towards the top of the mountain that night, then you can be up in time to see the sun rise over the peaks in the morning. It is quite easy to get to from Xian.

  26. tee kai siong Says:

Right on on Mt Huashan. To get more pictures search with google image instead.

  27. Joyce Says:

I found your site as I was on the mission many of your posts were.. Great footwork!…err fingerwork!
