The Gold medal was won by 24 year old Matthias Steiner, the Austrian-born German, who lifted 258kg on his final attempt, just a year after he lost his wife, Susann, in a car accident. As he was handed his Gold medal he held a picture of his wife. The silver medal went to Evgeny Chigishev of Russia.
