“It was Mr Henry Henderson who first began manufacturing his own special type of sauce back in the late part of the 19th century. Originally manufactured at 35 Broad Lane in Sheffield, Henderson’s Relish is still being made and has been in uninterrupted production within half a mile of the site from which the first bottle was filled”.

But the tiny Henderson’s Relish Factory in Leavygreave Road, Sheffield, which has become quite a landmark to locals, may never be the same again. A week ago someone stole part of the factories sign which usually sits on the gable end of the small building and they have even placed an advert on Sheffield Gumtree to try and sell the stolen sign.

“For Sale Half of an icon, that is – a Sheffield icon”.

Half of an icon, that is – a Sheffield Icon. I love Henderson’s relish, so I take great pleasure in putting up for sale half of the origonal “Henderson’s relish” sign!

Someone of an arty nature could make it into a coffee table, or a backstop for a dartboard etc. The possibilities are endless! Come on, its got to be worth at least 50p of someone’s money!

Meanwhile, a security guard at the Opal Two students housing complex close to the factory, told The Sheffield Star newspaper of the moment when he confronted the daring thieves who stole the sign.

“Two lads and a lass came waltzing up the road with the sign. I asked what the were doing with it and they replied it was a souvenir. They then ran off up the road where I thought they dumped the sign.”

Henderson’s relish has a few famous fans who include, Sean Bean, Brendan Ingle, Peter Stringfellow and Rick Savage. As well as me……who may not be famous, but I do get anyone travelling up to Scotland to visit to bring a couple of bottles. It’s magic!!
