As Nacho Novo made his way to the penalty spot my heart was in my mouth. He took a run towards to the ball and blasted Rangers into the UEFA Cup Final. David Beckham is to be named in Fabio Capello’s preliminary England squad of 30 today and is poised to win his 100th cap against France in Paris next week. Say what you like about Fabio Capello, he is no tool of the FA’s marketing department. Basing David Beckham’s return on a nice little friendly against the United States in May would have suited the men of commerce nicely. Sell a few tickets on the back of his century of England games; sell the television rights at a sky-high fee over the water; everyone’s a winner. Lovely jubbly, as those chaps at the Premier League like to say.
Capello recalled Beckham for the match against France in Paris next Wednesday because the England manager believes that it is the best thing to do for his team, because now is the right time to assess his form and fitness against opponents who represent a genuine test and because his presence will send a firm message to the younger players who covet his role.

David Beckham reportedly spoke to The Sunday Mirror, before the outcome of the Israel v
Russia game last night and re-affirmed his commitment to playing for England as long as he possibly can.
He said:
“I want to play in the next World Cup. That is a big goal for me and an enormous challenge, I believe I can do it. I wouldn’t say it if I didn’t mean it.”"Contrary to some people’s claims, I didn’t leave European football too early, I am still playing well and at a good standard. That’s I’m optimistic I can play in the 2010 World Cup.”"I won’t retire. I will always make myself available for my country. That hasn’t changed. I would rather be stuck on 99 caps and England qualify, than win 100 caps and we don’t make it.”
Well even though Becks hasn’t played as much as everyone anticipated, his star-power still sells tickets eh? I hope to watch him play at the World Cup.

After much speculation, the very sexy Freddie Ljungberg has today signed a £2 million move to West Ham. He had said that he was unhappy at Arsenal as they hadn’t managed to sign any big name players in recent years.
He said
“There were a lot of reasons why I wanted to leave Arsenal. Two years ago, when I signed my last contract, we talked a lot about the future and how they were going to bring in big players despite building a new stadium. We were hoping to stay one of the big clubs in England and Europe, but for me that didn’t really happen. Clubs have always wanted to buy me during the summer but I have always stayed loyal because I wanted to stay at Arsenal”.
Freddie who had been with Arsenal for 9 years insisted that he had no choice but to leave the Emirates Stadium, after Thierry Henry left in the summer and with the uncertainty surrounding Wenger’s long-term future at Arsenal, and Henry’s departure to Barcelona, Ljungberg felt that he had to leave as well. He is now hoping he can help West Ham challenge for major honours in the future.
